Who Am I?
My journey to being an off the mat teacher started 3 years before I became a yoga teacher. My entry to yoga was working in retail with lululemon and it was my time in Kingston, ON while managing the storefront there that I met my long time friend and mentor, dallas delahunt. She operated a donation based yoga studio and it was my first time experiencing yoga with teachers who were exclusively off the mat and offered tons of hands on assists. Every class was curated to an unbelievable playlist and long savasanas with shoulder presses and neck massages were commonplace. When I moved back to Toronto my student practice struggled because I couldn’t find these elements in any yoga class in the city.
This became my mission as a yoga teacher. To bring my friends teachings to the city of Toronto and spread the goodness of her offering. To this day, my recipe for success in every class is rooted in what I learned from her studio in 2012. She guided me in the direction of other incredible teachers with similar styles - Bryan Kest, Seane Corne, Kathryn Anne Flynn and more.
Why is this Important?
What I learned from dallas has allowed me to teach yoga for over 9 years without feeling burntout and exhausted. I started teaching off the mat from day 1 of graduating YTT thanks to her advice to never set up a mat. I started with what many people would call ‘basic, simple’ sequences and still strive to keep my offerings in line with those descriptors. I take great pride in teaching a basic yoga class that allows students to connect to their mind and body while maintaining my energy and vitality to teach yoga until my 70s and 80s.
